Étape 12 - Vuelta a Costa Rica 2009 - L'étape pour Rojas, le jaune pour Acevedo

Colombia's Janier Acevedo of team Greatwall-Indeportes Antioquia took the overall title at the 45th Vuelta Ciclista Internacional a Costa Rica after the 12th and final stage today between San Isidro of Pérez Zeledón, at the South of the country, and the capital San José.

Rojas, a former La Vuelta a Costa Rica champion in 2005, and one of the local favourites, covered the 134.8 kilometre course of this “queen stage” with a time of 3:52:34. Second place went to last year’s champion Gregory Brenes, of team BCR-Pizza Hut-KHS, who couldn’t catch Acevedo in the general classification and gave up his crown this time. 

Nevertheless, the 21 year old rider secured the U23 trophy as a consolation prize. This might be the last race for Brenes on his own country, since the Spanish UCI Continental Team Burgos-Monumental recently signed him for coming road seasons.  

The new champion also won the red polka dot jersey of the Best Climber in the race, while his team finished up first in the Teams’ Classification.

The final stage winner Juan Carlos Rojas, took the Points title, while Citibank-Economy Rent a Car-Blue’s Eduardo Garita took the overall Sprints title.

"I barely managed to hang with the main pack for the day over the Mountain of Death to the finish line in downtown San Jose. In the end I finished 30th out of 90 starters in the 12 day race. It was the fastest race I ever did. Only the 24hrs of adrenaline compared in how much my body was messed up afterwards."
